Camping in France with a Tent
Camping with a tent in France can be a great vacation experience, with options for everyone. French campsites range from cheap and basic to huge, with many luxury facilities available. Visitors may be hiking or cycling in with a small tent, driving in with the family tent, or even arriving to stay in a holiday company’s tent that is already put up on site for them.
France is the perfect place for a camping holiday. As Europe’s third largest country, there is so much variety in the countryside, ranging from the mountains of the Alps and the Pyrenees, to the historic chateaus of the Loire valley and prehistoric cave paintings in the Dordogne. The French also love watersports, which is not surprising when you see their beautiful coastline, ranging from the sun soaked beaches of the Mediterranean to the picturesque Breton fishing villages of the north. Brittany and Normandy in north western France can be easily reached by the less well known ferries from Devon to France, which leave from Plymouth for Roscoff, as well as the more well known routes on the south coast of England: from Dover to Calais and Weymouth to Cherbourg.
When buying a family tent, consider how many sleeping areas you will need, and how much space it will take up when packed in your car. For hot weather, a tent with mesh windows is nice, as it lets the air in to cool it down inside. For most family holidays, a cheap and basic tent will be suitable, as there will be good facilities in the campsites, and equipment and supplies available in the French shops. If you are camping somewhere more rugged, you may want to consider a more specialist mountaineering tent and equipment, and you must ensure that your bedding or sleeping bags will be warm enough. You should be able to find or order a suitable tent in outdoor pursuits shops, sports shops or camping shops.
If you’re not convinced about camping in France with a tent, there are other options available. You can hire a motorcaravan, stay in campsites and caravan parks with a touring caravan, or rent a static caravan in a holiday park.
With so many options available, whether you are touring with a small tent or a caravan, or booking a big tent in a luxury campsite, you will have a great holiday in France.
